      <![CDATA[In just the past six weeks, two supernovae have flared up in an obscure
galaxy in the constellation Hercules. Never before have astronomers
observed two of these powerful stellar explosions occurring in the same
galaxy so close together in time.<br><br><span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image"><img alt="181075main1_SN2007_350.jpg" src="http://ad.lnds.net/images/181075main1_SN2007_350.jpg" class="mt-image-right" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px; float: right;" height="350" width="350"></span>The galaxy, known as MCG +05-43-16, is 380 million light-years from
Earth. Until this year, astronomers had never sighted a supernova
popping off in this stellar congregation. A supernova is an extremely
energetic and life-ending explosion of a star.<br><br>Making the event even more unusual is the fact that the two supernovae
belong to different types. Supernova 2007ck is a Type II event - which
is triggered when the core of a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel
and collapses gravitationally, producing a shock wave that blows the
star to smithereens. Supernova 2007ck was first observed on May 19.<br><br>
In contrast, Supernova 2007co is a Type Ia event, which occurs when a
white dwarf star accretes so much material from a binary companion star
that it blows up like a giant thermonuclear bomb. It was discovered on
June 4, 2007. A white dwarf is the exposed core of a star after it has
ejected its atmosphere; it's approximately the size of Earth but with
the mass of our Sun.<br><br>
"Most galaxies have a supernova every 25 to 100 years, so it's
remarkable to have a galaxy with two supernovae discovered just 16 days
apart," says Stefan Immler of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. In
2006 Immler used NASA's Swift satellite to image two supernovae in the
elliptical galaxy NGC 1316, but both of those explosions were Type Ia
events, and they were discovered six months apart.<br><br>
The simultaneous appearance of two supernovae in one galaxy is an
extremely rare occurrence, but it's merely a coincidence and does not
imply anything unusual about MCG +05-43-16. Because the two supernovae
are tens of thousands of light-years from each other, and because light
travels at a finite speed, astronomers in the galaxy itself, or in a
different galaxy, might record the two supernovae exploding thousands
of years apart.<br> <div><br></div>]]>

      A mysterious shiny coating found on rocks in many of Earth&apos;s arid environments could reveal whether there was once life on Mars, according to new research.

The research, published in the July edition of the journal Geology, reveals that the dark coating known as desert varnish creates a record of life around it, by binding traces of DNA, amino acids and other organic compounds to desert rocks. Samples of Martian desert varnish could therefore show whether there has been life on Mars at any stage over the last 4.5 billion years.

The researchers hope that these results will encourage any future Mars Sample Return mission to add desert varnish to its Martian shopping list.

The source of the varnish, which looks like it has been painted onto the rocks, has intrigued scientists since the mid nineteenth century, including Darwin, who was so fascinated that he asked the geochemist Berzelius to investigate it. It was previously suggested that its dark colour was the result of the presence of the mineral manganese oxide, and that any traces of life found within the varnish came from biological processes caused by microbes in this mineral.

However, the new research used a battery of techniques, including high resolution electron microscopy, to show that any traces of life in the varnish do not come from microbes in manganese oxide. The research reveals that the most important mineral in the varnish is silica, which means that biological processes are not significant in the varnish's formation. On desert rock surfaces, silica is dissolved from other minerals and then gels together to form a glaze, trapping organic traces from its surroundings. 

Dr Randall Perry, lead author of the research from the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, explained that as life is not involved in desert varnish formation, the varnish can act as an indicator of whether life was present or absent in the local environment. 

Dr Perry said: "If silica exists in varnish-like coatings in Martian deserts or caves, then it may entomb ancient microbes or chemical signatures of previous life there, too. Desert varnish forms over tens of thousands of years and the deepest, oldest layers in the varnish may have formed in very different conditions to the shallowest, youngest layer.

"These lustrous chroniclers of the local surroundings can provide a window back in time. Martian desert varnish would contain a fascinating chronology of the Martian setting," he added.

Well, many years ago I was watching <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/">The Nature of Things</a> TV Show, and the history of a chinese governmento plan to augment protein in the chinese daily diet.

Very simple, give them 2 eggs at week!

But wait, how many resources are needed for this colossal project?

Well, we need the 8.67 % of the world wheat production!!
Almost twice the canadian wheat production, and 3/4 of USA production!!!

Here are the numbers:

A hen can lays <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2005-09%2CGGGL%3Aen&q=how+many+eggs+a+Hen+can+lay+in+a+year%3F&btnG=Search">about a 200 - 300 eggs in a year</a>, so we can think a hen can feed 3 chinese people for year.

So we need in a year 8*12*1.307.842.645 =  125,552,893,920 hen eggs!!
And we need 1,307,842,645/3 = 435,947,548 hens!!

A hen can eat about 0.13 Kg of wheat in a day, i.e. 109.5 kilograms in a year.

So we need the the 8.67% of world wheat production.

      <![CDATA[<p>But with a surface temperature of minus 179 degrees Celsius and an  atmospheric pressure 1-1/2 times that of Earth, could fluvial processes on Titan  be anything like those on Earth?  </p> <p>&quot;The idea that rivers of methane moving chunks of ice on Titan ought to obey  the same rules as rivers on Earth is not what you would assume at first,&quot; said  Gary Parker, the W. H. Johnson Professor of Geology and a professor of civil and  environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  &quot;However, if river dynamics are truly understood at a physical level, then  relations that provide reasonable results on Earth ought to provide similarly  reasonable results on Titan.&quot;  </p> <p>Parker, who has collected data from rivers all over the world, has calculated  what should be key similarities and key differences between river networks on  Earth and Titan.  </p> <p>There are only three parameters that differ significantly between Earth and  Titan, Parker said. First is the acceleration due to gravity -- on Titan it is  about one-seventh the value on Earth. Second is the viscosity of flowing fluid  -- the viscosity of liquid methane on Titan is about one-fifth that of water on  Earth.  </p> <p>Third is the submerged specific gravity of sediment -- the value on Titan is  about two-thirds of that on Earth.  </p> <p>&quot;What this means is that for the same discharge of liquid methane as to  water, the channel characteristics on Titan should be remarkably similar to  those on Earth,&quot; Parker said. &quot;However, because of the smaller acceleration due  to gravity, channel slopes on Titan should be wider, deeper and less steep than  those on Earth.&quot;  </p> <p>Wildcards that make Parker's predictions tentative include a freeze-thaw  process of methane that might not be analogous to the freeze-thaw process of  water on Earth, and the formation of hydrocarbons on Titan that might add a kind  of cohesion not encountered on Earth. &quot;The interaction of sunlight with a  hydrocarbon rich atmosphere could possibly precipitate very sticky compounds  that could give streams on Titan a degree of cohesion that makes them behave  differently,&quot; Parker said.  </p> <p>If the underlying physics has been captured correctly, Parker's correlations  could be used to predict river features not just on Earth and Titan, but  elsewhere as well; revealing the internal consistency of fluvial processes at  work under vastly different conditions.  </p> <p>&quot;We are now receiving images from Mars that show relic rivers. But these  analogues to what has happened on Earth are very, very old and the processes may  not have been very strong,&quot; Parker said. &quot;What is happening on Titan, however,  may be every bit as active and exciting as what is happening on Earth.&quot;  </p> <p> </p> <div align="center">###</div>  <p>Parker will present his findings at the American Geophysical Union meeting in  San Francisco, Dec. 5-9.
